a bit about us
It started with a trip to Alice Springs & a 1980’s organic gardening pamphlet
Sitting around the family table on vacation with Kelly’s family, one of those lazy afternoons when it’s too hot to go outside, Aaron picked up an organic gardening pamphlet looking vintage and worn... ”organic”.. that caught his attention. He flicked through, found a beekeeping article, and having no previous knowledge of bees, Aaron was immediately intrigued…
It sparked a discussion around the table, and it turned out they already knew a beekeeper; Kelly’s cousin. Time for a road trip! They lived just 15 minutes away!
A “quick trip” turned into three hours out amongst the bee hives in the summer heat where they inspected a hive and caught the buzz! They hadn’t even returned to Perth yet and were already organising to purchase bees and equipment.
Within a few weeks they had their first hive and were underway, reading as many books and blogs as they could get their hands on. There was a lot of information out there!
They quickly learnt it was best to have two hives so you could compare them.. two became four… they started collecting swarms.. four became ten within three years.. which exploded to over fifty as their experience grew.
Kelly and Aaron started finding the trouble wasn’t getting new hives, it was with finding suitable properties to host them,. Asking everyone they knew if they owned property became a huge conversion starter!
Selling honey wasn’t a priority but excess stock prompted the decision to start marketing; which has since sold out every year and almost overnight SweetTALK WA was born! Even the kids, Leah and Thomas, were involved in market stalls and carting 1kg tubs to school - turns out honey makes stronger kids!
Not many people realise, but TALK is actually the family’s initials; Thomas, Aaron, Leah, and Kelly. It also happens to reflect their huge passion for talking about bees and the amazing impacts they have on the environment.
Today SweetTALK continues to slowly expand, venturing further out to include Canola fields and the bushland surrounding Perth. They are proudly building the business sustainably by trying to keep their customers local and offering cash back to encourage their customers to return jars, reducing waste and landfill. Read more
It is Kelly and Aaron’s goal to begin passing on more of their knowledge through childhood learning and adult beekeeping courses - watch this space!
